How to apply for MRCP Part 1

Applications are made online through your MyMRCP(UK) account during the one-week window shown in the table above. The window opens and closes at 8:00am UK local time, and late applications are not accepted, so diarise the opening date rather than the exam date.

  1. Create or sign in to your MyMRCP(UK) account before the window opens.
  2. Select the diet you want and your preferred examination centre.
  3. Pay the fee for that diet — £520 for UK centres and £696 internationally from the September 2026 diet onwards.
  4. Submit any reasonable-adjustment request by the separate, earlier adjustments deadline listed for your diet.

Centre availability is finite and popular centres fill early in the window, so apply on the opening day if your centre choice matters.

MRCP Part 1 eligibility

Part 1 is the entry examination for MRCP(UK) and is normally taken after a period of postgraduate clinical experience following primary medical qualification. Eligibility is assessed by MRCP(UK) from the qualification and experience details held on your account, and trainees inside and outside UK training programmes may sit the exam.

Eligibility criteria are set and periodically revised by the Federation, so check the current requirements on the official MRCP(UK) site before you apply — your details must be verified on your account before an application can be accepted.

Attempts and re-sits

MRCP(UK) applies a limit to the number of Part 1 attempts, and candidates who reach that limit must satisfy additional requirements before applying again. Because attempt rules are reviewed from time to time, confirm the current limit with MRCP(UK) rather than relying on advice from previous cohorts.

If you are re-sitting, the practical constraint is the calendar: with three diets a year and a one-week application window, a failed attempt usually means the next realistic sitting is about four months later. Use the interval to work through your incorrect and flagged questions rather than restarting revision from the beginning.

When MRCP Part 1 results are released

Results are confirmed by the examination board approximately six weeks after the exam and are published through your MyMRCP(UK) account. Each diet also has a published "results by" date, shown in the table above — for the January 2027 diet that is 5 March 2027.

Your result shows your total mark out of 200, the pass mark set for that diet by standard-setting, and a breakdown of performance by specialty. There is no negative marking, and the pass mark moves slightly between diets according to paper difficulty.

What happens after passing MRCP Part 1

Passing Part 1 makes you eligible to apply for Part 2 Written and, once that is passed, for PACES. Most candidates move on to Part 2 within one or two diets while the medicine is still fresh, since the syllabus overlaps heavily and the step up is in clinical reasoning rather than new content.

Part 1 also has a validity period for progression through the MRCP(UK) diploma, so plan your Part 2 and PACES attempts rather than leaving a long gap. Check the current validity rules on the official site when you plan your timeline.

Revision timeline for your diet

Most candidates give MRCP Part 1 three to four months alongside clinical work. Working backwards from your exam date:

16–12 weeks out

Apply, then build coverage

Applications usually open around this point, so book first and plan second. Work specialty by specialty through structured notes and answer questions in tutor mode as you go, so gaps surface early rather than in the final month.

12–6 weeks out

Volume and analytics

Move to mixed question blocks and let per-topic accuracy decide what you revisit. Cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology and clinical sciences carry a lot of marks — check them against your weakest specialties rather than revising what feels comfortable.

6–2 weeks out

Timed papers

Sit full 100-question papers under exam conditions so pacing across two three-hour papers is practised, not assumed. Review every incorrect answer and re-attempt flagged questions.

Final 2 weeks

Flagged and incorrect only

Stop adding new material. Work through flagged and previously incorrect questions, plus your lowest-scoring topics, and keep one or two light timed blocks to stay sharp.

Dates, deadlines and fees explained

How many times a year is MRCP Part 1 held?

Three diets a year — normally January, May and September. Each diet has a single application window that opens and closes at 8:00am UK local time, and applications made outside that window are not accepted.

When do applications open for MRCP Part 1?

Roughly ten to twelve weeks before the exam, and the window is only about one week wide. For the January 2027 diet applications ran from 27 October to 3 November 2026; for May 2027 they run 9–16 March 2027; for September 2027 they run 13–20 July 2027.

How much does MRCP Part 1 cost?

From the September 2026 diet the fee is £520 for UK centres and £696 for international centres. Earlier 2026 diets were £502 and £672 respectively.

When do MRCP Part 1 results come out?

Results are confirmed by the examination board approximately six weeks after the exam and published through your MyMRCP(UK) account. The Federation also publishes a "results by" date for each diet — for the January 2027 exam that is 5 March 2027.

What is the reasonable-adjustment deadline?

Each diet has a separate, earlier deadline for requesting reasonable adjustments — usually a week or two after applications close. If you need adjustments you must apply by that date, not by the exam date.

Is MRCP Part 1 delivered remotely or in a test centre?

From the September 2026 (2026/03) diet Part 1 is delivered in-centre, with Myanmar- and Sudan-based candidates continuing on remote online proctoring. Confirm your centre options with MRCP(UK) when you apply.
