MRCP Part 1 study timeline: planning your revision around a diet
Most Part 1 candidates lose time not because they revise badly, but because they start planning too late. This guide is about the planning and preparation timeline — how to build a revision schedule backwards from a diet, protect leave, and decide whether to sit or defer.
Looking for the calendar itself? All diet dates, application opening and closing dates, adjustment deadlines, fees and results dates are maintained on the MRCP Part 1 exam dates page. This article does not duplicate them.
Fix your diet before you build a plan
Everything below counts backwards from a single fixed point: the day you sit. Confirm your diet and its application window on the MRCP Part 1 exam dates page first, then start the timeline. Application windows close hard, and the adjustment deadline falls earlier than the standard one.
Two secondary dates shape planning: results release, and the closing date for the next diet — which sometimes falls before you get your result. If a resit is possible, know that date so a fail does not cost you a whole cycle.
Planning backwards: a 16-week template
This template assumes you are working clinically and can protect 8–12 hours a week, rising at the end.
Weeks 16–13 — Build the map. Work through the blueprint specialty by specialty. Read a topic, then immediately do 20–30 questions on it. Aim for coverage, not mastery. Log accuracy per topic from day one.
Weeks 12–7 — Volume. Question-led revision, 40–60 items a day in timed blocks. Every wrong answer gets a one-line reason: knowledge gap, misread stem, or guideline detail. Revisit the weakest three topics each week.
Weeks 6–3 — Consolidate the gaps. Now use your own data. The topics sitting furthest below your average get dedicated sessions. Clinical sciences and pharmacology reward this stage disproportionately because the facts are discrete and testable.
Weeks 2–1 — Full-length rehearsal. Two complete 100-question papers under exam conditions, at the time of day you will actually sit. Then targeted review only — no new material.
Final 48 hours. Sleep, logistics, ID, centre location, and a light pass over your own error log. Nothing new.
Practical scheduling traps
- Annual leave. Request leave for the exam day the moment your application is accepted, not when the rota is published.
- Nights before the diet. If your rota has you on nights in the fortnight before, swap early. Sleep debt costs more marks than an extra 500 questions gains.
- Fees and refunds. Withdrawal and refund rules are tied to the application window — read them before you pay, not after.
- Two-paper stamina. Six hours of best-of-five questions is a physical task. Practise at least two full-length papers, or the second paper will be where you lose marks.
Deciding whether to sit or defer
A simple, honest rule: if your timed-block accuracy over the last two weeks is not yet comfortably above your target with four weeks to go, and your weakest three topics are still well below average, deferring one diet is usually the higher-expected-value choice. First-attempt pass rates are the highest of any candidate group — see what the official pass-rate data shows.
Turning the timeline into daily work
Examrix maps every Part 1 topic to tutorials and single-best-answer questions, with timed exam mode in realistic block lengths, resumable sessions for interrupted shifts, and per-topic analytics so the weeks 6–3 phase is driven by your data rather than a guess.
